GOOD BYE JIM

It is with great sadness that we have to report the untimely passing of Jim Tejada, Wings For Greyhounds Crew Chief, web master and dear friend. He will be missed by humans and hounds alike.

VERY BUSY SEASON:

We seem to have spent the greater part of the last few months airborne. Maggie is convinced that if she fell asleep at the controls that the Wings For Greyhounds airplane could find its' way to Tucson Airport. We can report having flown 20 missions in the last four months for eight different greyhound organizations, including one trip flown on Christmas Eve to bring two greyhounds "home for the holidays". We have been able to do this thanks to the generosity of our donors and grant makers who provide Wings For Greyhounds with the means to respond to requests for flights. We are very grateful for the wonderful support.

Our media efforts on behalf of the racing greyhounds include a story on our project in the August issue of McCall's Magazine, the very successful "Pet Story" show now in rotation on Animal Planet, and the US debut of "Dogs With Jobs" on PBS. We have also been featured in local media at our various destinations and in the aviation magazine "California Pilot".

HERE TODAY...GONE TO DEWEY!

After a busy summer season Wings For Greyhounds president and pilot Maggie McCurry went to Dewey Beach, Delaware to give a seminar on "Getting Publicity For Your Greyhound Event" at Greyhounds Reach the Beach 2000. Over 2000 greyhounds and 1700 people descended on the tiny town of Dewey Beach for an all-greyhounds-all-the-time weekend.

We would like to thank the wonderful people at PETsMART Charities who generously underwrote the cost of the trip.

WINGS & WOOFS AT SEDONA AIRSHOW:

More than a dozen adopted racers came to support the Wings For Greyhounds exhibit at the Sedona Airport Day in October. The day before the show we flew in Grant and Commando from Tucson. Both were immediately adopted and are now professional couch potatoes. The show generated several more adoption applications for Greyhound Rescue of the Red Rocks which have since turned into loving homes for greyhounds.

OUR PSA IS BEING HEARD:

The Public Service Announcement recorded for Wings For Greyhounds by Mr. Ed Asner has been heard in several locations. Reports have come in that people have heard it played in Tucson, Arizona, California, Washington State and Oregon. KZLA, the largest country and western station in Los Angeles has donated over $10,000 worth of air play to date. The KZLA exposure resulted in a large donation of dog food to some of the southern California adoption groups. It's great to hear that it is turning up on the radio and having an effect.

OUR TINIEST PASSENGER:

We've flown big greyhounds and we've flown small greyhounds. We've flown youngsters and we've flown seniors. But we had never flown a greyhound puppy as tiny and young as this.

At just nine weeks old and suffering from a leg broken in two places, we flew our precious little bundle from Tucson, where she was saved by Arizona Greyhound Rescue, to San Diego.

Her new mom Cyndy Mobley was at the Lindberg Field to meet her newest family member, accompanied by a welcoming committee and a reporter and camera crew from a local TV news station. In keeping with the aviation theme she has been named Amelia for the famous aviatrix.

Our thanks go to Arizona Greyhound Rescue for coordinating this special adoption and to Carol Burnley of the Northern Arizona Chapter of the Greyhound Adoption League who kindly flew the trip as nursemaid.
