Wings For Greyhounds - They Run For Their Lives We Fly For Their Lives

NEWS UPDATE

Fall 1999

CANADIAN SHOW TO AIR ON PBS IN US:

Canadian TV show "Dogs With Jobs," a 13 part series on working dogs, will air in Canada in early 2000, and has been picked up by PBS in the US. They will run it during their Fall 2000 Fund Raising schedule. Racing Greyhounds are featured in one of the segments. A committed and thorough film crew followed a greyhound, Dee, from her retirement to her adoption and life as a pet, including her Wings For Greyhounds flight from Tucson to Los Angeles.

Once again we worked with The Greyhound Adoption League in Tucson and Retired Racers Greyhound Rescue & Adoption in Acton, California. Marsha McMurtry of the McMurtry Kennel in Tucson kindly opened her facility to the film crew for shots showing how Dee was trained as a racing dog.

Amazing Ending To This Story: While waiting at Burbank Airport for the film crew Dee's flying companion August found his new Dad in a Southwest Airlines pilot, Tony, and then Tony's neighbor, adopted Dee! Both were with their new families within a week.

WINGS FOR GREYHOUNDS ALUMNI:

Seven Wings For Greyhounds flying alumni were united at Retired Racers Play Day on October 24th. Cody, Molly, Lulu, August, Dee, Liola and Witty all got their wings with Wings For Greyhounds. These intrepid fliers all made trips out of Tucson to the Retired Racers ranch. (All of them also have screen credits, having starred in one or another of our televised rescues.!)

NEW DESTINATION - THE BAY AREA!

WFG volunteer pilot Evan Binn flew Money and Slippers to the Northern California Greyhound Adoption Program in Tracy, California, near San Francisco. This new organization is headed up by Jean Rice and we were pleased to fly the inaugural adoptees. We look forward to many more flights on behalf of this organization.

If you are in the Bay Area and considering adopting an ex-racer, call (209) 832-7013. NCGAP will be happy to answer your questions and help you find the companion greyhound of your dreams.

THE LA TIMES....AGAIN!!

Another splendid story in the Los Angeles Times ran in September. It featured Bella, the very first greyhound to fly on a Wings For Greyhounds flight. As usual the story generated a lot of interest, adoptions, and an offer by The Mercy Crusade to find donated food for Retired Racers.

OTHER WINGS FOR GREYHOUNDS MEDIA:

Maggie McCurry was named "Woman Of The Day" on the CBS show "Woman 2 Woman". The nomination was sent in by Cindy France and featured a short blurb about greyhound rescue and a photo of Maggie, the airplane, Lanky Lance, and Kahula, Cindy's own hound.

"Woman Pilot Magazine" is running a two page story on the Wings For Greyhounds airborne rescue project in the new issue. Already we have email from all over the country, including what promises to be a full-on commitment from pilots in the North East to search out ways to do what we do here over there. Way to go!

Interested pilots and greyhound adoption groups on the East Coast area, please contact Luellyn Leonard at lluellyn@greyhounds.zzn.com, or phone (401) 847-2170.

MELANIE & HER AIRPLANE GO TO THE DOGS:

Pilot Melanie Walker of Van Nuys, California, flew her first Wings For Greyhounds Flight recently. Maggie flew copilot on a trip to Dog Rescue in Gilroy, California. Two sweet young ladies were delivered safely to Hollister Airport after a two hour flight. Melanie's airplane is well equipped to handle the greyhounds - she has Saluki's of her own who fly regularly. It was a greyt flight for the girls (well, all of us girls, really), and we welcome Melanie into that small group of pilots who are willing and able to use their airplanes and flying skills to help the racing dogs.

ARK TRUST MEMBER FLIES ON TUCSON TRIP:

Dave Norman, who placed the high bid on going along on a Wings For Greyhounds flight to Tucson at the recent Ark Trust fund raiser, made his flight at the end of October. He flew to Tucson and visited the Greyhound Adoption League kennel, saw the greyhounds "at work" at the Tucson Greyhound Park, and participated as copilot on the return flight to Van Nuys with a rescued greyhound for Retired Racers. During the flight he was in sole control of the "passengers," providing canine comfort and TLC. Thanks, Dave, for the good work!

WFG LOGO SWEATS ARE HERE:
